How to Start Training For Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the planet today. In order to compete well in this sport however, the enjoying best MMA training available is important to success. The following article discusses ways and means on how to join the sport through proper preparation and training.

1. Know why you want to train. In my opinion this is the most important first step. Understand your motives. Understand why you want to train for mixed martial arts. Is it because you have plans to compete in the sport in an amateur or professional capacity; is it to learn self defense techniques; build up your confidence; or simply to impress some people or maybe the girls you meet.

2. Get up to speed on physical conditioning - Are you in a good physical condition? If you are serious about getting into mixed martial arts, a very important step is seeing your doctor and getting a thorough medical check-up. Let him know of what you plan to do so that he can recommend the proper medical and health advice.

Get fit. Build up endurance through walking and running programs and body strength through appropriate lower and upper body weight training and conditioning.

3. Start with a basic fighting technique, if you already don't have one. Mixed Martial Arts, as the name clearly implies is a combination of different fighting styles and techniques. In my opinion, it would be difficult to try to master different wrestling, hand, feet and knee strikes techniques as well as the countless defensive maneuvers as a complete newbie.

Many successful fighters joined MMA with strong foundations in wrestling, boxing, muay thai, jujitsu, karate, and other popular fighting styles.

4. Join an MMA gym - If you are serious you need to join a gym and get a coach. Again there are gyms and there are gyms. Do not join the first gym you run across. Evaluate your options. Visit and talk to the people. Get feedback from players who had used that facility.

Get a gym which you feel will most serve your purpose and objectives. Not to mention the level and quality of the equipment, coaching, sanitation and of course, price.

5. Train properly. After you have joined a gym that you can trust, follow the program. Train as hard as you can but listen to your body. As a starting athlete, pace yourself. The program that you are with should take this into consideration vis-a-vis a careful evaluation of your present capability and future capacity as well as the fighting styles your body, experience and attitude is best suited for. This is where a good coach is most essential.
